Phil Doncon

Phil Doncon, as artist and performer, has been developing the notion of 'live' painting for over 15 years. Exploring the creative space between music and visual art has led him most recently to working with musicians in live shows.

The rationale driving this exploration is that a live painting process enhances the audio experience of the music. That is, responding to the feel, sound and energy of the music and musicians provides an opportunity for audiences to engage with both music and the making of marks in a new, multi-sensory way.

The music and presence of the performers informs the immediacy of the line, colour, texture and movement of the paint with a spontaneity that is reflective of the spirit of the music, allowing for a freshness and vitality of marks.

Phil has performed his style of live painting in collaboration with three of Australia's premier symphony orchestras as part of the  Play me a Picture  series- the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra in 2008 and 2012, the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra in 2006, 2007 and 2012.

His depth and breadth of skill, talent and passion for this style of performance has led him to seek out and explore other more intimate settings such as the Ellington Jazz Club in Perth, Dizzy's Jazz Club in Melbourne and gigs with the likes of Shameem, Carl Mackey Trio, Graham Wood Trio, Boom Crash Opera and the Perth Chamber Orchestra
