Freshwater pearls are special in jewellery because they are more affordable than saltwater pearls, and they have a more delicate lustre. They are also more difficult to find in large sizes. At Latitude Jewellers, our passion for Australian freshwater pearls is nothing new to the business, we discovered we had a passion for creating innovative jewellery designs for our pearls many years ago. At Latitude Jewellers we have the main mission of making sure every jewellery piece tells a story. Dedicated to honouring the unique beauty of the Islands, sea and land, we now feature our own pearls, a variety of Australian gemstones and the exquisite Pink Diamonds from the Argyle Diamond Mine in our creations.
The Australian freshwater pearls we use to make our unique pieces are not low in quality and rarity. Each of our pearls takes five years to grow. Three years to grow the oyster then the pearl is harvested two years after seeding and continuous nurturing. Once the pearl is harvested the oyster can only be reseeded up to three times. Currently, all the stock shell are bred in a hatchery to ensure pearling at the Abrolhos Islands continues to be a sustainable industry for our future.
We also use other types of Australian gemstones in our jewellery, such as opals, sapphires, and diamonds. We love working with these materials because they are all unique and have their own special story to tell. We believe that every piece of jewellery should be special and tell a story, and that is what we strive to do with our designs.
